Cadaqués would not be the same if it were not for all those locals who promoted culture, learning, botany, medicine, painting, etcetera. Even all the engineering works, such as the GI-614 local road, were promoted and managed by local people. Among them Frederic Rahola I Trèmols,who was a member of parliament who helped building it. This was a very important event for the inhabitants of Cadaqués, as once the road was built, the telephone, the telegraph, the post and the electricity were installed, significantly improving conditions of life in the town.
The most notable people in Cadaqués were the following:
• Joan Escofet i Palau: (Cadaqués, 1720-1810) Military engineer and architect. He donated a building for public use, known as the ancient General Escofet’s marmosseria (executor’s office).
• Esperança LLorens: (Cadaqués, 18th-19th centuries) Heroine of Girona siege.
• Francesc Xavier Garriga i Palau: (Cadaqués, 1864 - ?) Essayist and poet. He studied Law, Philosophy and was a professor at Reus, Córdoba, Oviedo and Barcelona secondary schools.
• Octavi Carreras i Figaró: (Cadaqués, 1862 - ?) Journalist and writer.
• Frances Xavier Godó i LLorens: (Cadaqués, 1858 - 1915) Lawyer, journalist and playwright.
• Frederic Trèmols i Borrell: (Cadaqués, 1831 – Barcelona, 1900) Professor of organic-inorganic chemistry, first in Granada, later in Barcelona where he became dean of the Chemistry Faculty. He picked plants all over Catalonia and collected a herbarium of more than 25,000 samples which is kept at the Botanic Institute of Barcelona.
• Frederic Rahola i Trèmols: (Cadaqués, 1858 - 1919) Writer, jurist, and politician, member of LLiga Catalana. He promoted the construction of the road which meant a breakthrough in the field of technology.
• Victor Rahola i Trèmols: (Cadaqués, 1866 - 1952) Frederic Rahola i Trèmols’ brother. He was a doctor and writer, author of the poems “Cadaquesencs”, 1930.
• Lídia de Cadaqués (Lídia Noguer): (Cadaqués, 1866 – Agullana, 1946). She inspired Eugeni D’Ors, the Catalan writer, to write his book “La ben plantada”.
• Antoni Bonifaci Pont i Pell: (Cadaqués, 1861 - 1946) Doctor, researcher and writer. He founded the newspaper “El progress” and contributed to many specialized magazines such as: Semaine Médicale de Paris and Semana Médica de Buenos Aires. He also played a leading role in the study of leprosy.
• Carles Rahola i Llorens: (Cadaqués, 1881 - 1939) Historian and writer.
• Manel Berenguer i Tuegols: (Cadaqués, 1881 – Ecuatorial Guinea 1924) Shipwright, inventor and carpenter. He built all types of ships, promoted “canots” a type of canoe which wealthy people used to go to Barcelona.
• Dario Rahola i LLorens: (Cadaqués, 19th c. - 1940) Journalist.
• Àngels Planells: (Cadaqués, 1901 – Blanes 1989) She met Dalí and as a result she took up Surrealism. She took part in the London International Surrealist Exhibition in 1936 representing Sapin together with Picasso, Dalí, Miró and Óscar Domínguez.
• Gaietà Rahola i Escofet and Josep Rahola i Sastre: Authors of La marina mercant de Cadaqués “The merchant navy of Cadaqués”,1976
• Salvador Dalí i Domènech: (Figueres, 1904 - 1989) Painter, writer and versatile artist. Catalan surrealist painter, he lived and worked in Cadaqués.
Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire includes design in a variety of media such as jewellery, clothes, shop windows, furniture among others. He is credited as cocreator of Luis Buñuel's surrealist films Un chien Andalou and l’Age d’Or. He also wrote some books, El mito trágico del Angelus de Millet, La Vida Secreta etcetera.
